As per the order of the Ministry of Personnel, Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana has been appointed as Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) and Senior IPS officer VSK Kaumudi as Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Significantly, Asthana's name came in the headlines in the CBI vs CBI case. In this case, the same year, the court accepted the report of the investigating agency in which it gave a clean chit to former CBI special director Rakesh Asthana and deputy police superintendent Devendra Kumar.

The order of the Personnel Ministry states that he has been appointed as Director General (DG) of the Border Security Force from the date of joining the post till 31 July 2021. Asthana is a 1948 batch IPS officer.
Kaumudi, a 1986 batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as Director General (DG) of the 'Bureau of Police Research and Development' (BPR & D). The order states that he has been appointed as Special Secretary (Internal Security) of the Ministry of Home Affairs till November 30, 2022.
His batchmate of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Mohammad Javed Akhtar, has been appointed as the Director General of the Fire Service in Civil Defense and Home Guard. Akhtar will take charge of this post till 31 July 2021. He is currently serving as Special Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Who is Rakesh Asthana?
Rakesh Asthana hails from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. He was born in 1961 in Ranchi. His father HK Asthana was a teacher at Netarhat School. Asthana has completed his early education from this school. Despite being an IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, he has a lot of love for Bihar and Jharkhand.
Asthana has completed higher education from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi. He has also taught history at St. Xavier's College. But after getting successful in UPSC examination in 1984, he got Gujarat cadre as IPS officer.
