Ancient importance of temple
Hansali village is in Katra. In the past, Sridhar, the supreme devotee of Vaishnodevi lived in this village. They did not have any child. One day in Navratri, he invited virgin girls for worship. Vaishno Devi appeared here in disguise as a girl. After the Puja, Vaishno Devi asked Sridhar to invite the people of the village to store their houses. Sridhar accepted the girl and called the people of the village to the store.
At that time, Bhairavnath, a disciple of Guru Gorakhnath, was also invited for food with disciples. The villagers reached Sridhar's house for a bhandara. Then Vaishno Devi served as a girl. Bhairavnath asked Kanya for meat and wine instead of Kheer-Puri. Virgo refused. However, Bhairavnath did not listen. Bhairavnath wanted to capture the girl, then changed her mother form and flew towards Trikuta mountain.
While hiding from Bhairavnath, Mata entered a cave and meditated for nine months. This cave is still famous by the name of Adyakumari, Adikumari or Garbhajoon. After 9 months, the girl took the form of Goddess outside the cave. Mata asks Bhairavnath to return. However, he did not agree.
Then Mata Vaishnavi took the form of Mahakali and killed Bhairavnath. The head of Bhairavnath was beheaded and fell into the Bhairav valley of Trikuta mountain, 8 km from the cave. Today that place is known as Bhairo Nath Temple. The place where the mother Vaishno Devi killed the stubborn Bhairavnath is the place known as the Holy Cave i.e. Bhavan.
The sacred cave was discovered 700 years ago
There are many beliefs regarding the discovery of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. However, according to the official website of the Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine Board, the temple was discovered about 700 years ago by Pt. Sridhar. Mother had blessed the store at Pt Sridhar. Devi came in the form of a girl and left Bhandare in the middle to escape Bhairavnath.
Then Sridhar remained unhappy and left even food and water. At that time the Goddess appeared in Sridhar's dream and showed the way to the cave. Sridhar reached the cave of Vaishnodevi by the path told by the goddess.
Caves, Rastas and Assumptions
Vaishno Devi is enthroned in a cave. The importance of Vaishno Devi is as important as the cave here. The path currently used to see the Goddess is not a natural path. The new route was built in 1977.
When the number of devotees in the temple is small, the gate of the ancient cave is opened and devotees can reach the court of Mother through the old path. The holy Ganges water flows in the ancient cave. To reach Vaishno Devi temple one has to go through Adi virgin or Adyakunwari. There is also another cave here, which is called Garbha-joon.
