A film like 'Newton' established him in the industry. It also won him several awards with commercial success. He was awarded the Best Actor Asia Pacific Screen Award. The film premiered at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. It also became a film to be sent to the Oscars from India.
The role of a 324-year-old played in the film 'Rabta'
Rao played the role of a 324-year-old in Dinesh Vision's film 'Rabta'. Kriti Sanon and Sushant Singh Rajput played her lead roles in the film. Rajkumar Rao was seen in the role of a villain. For her role, Rajkumar had to resort to prosthetic makeup, for which he used to take 5 to 6 hours daily. However, this film could not do anything special at the box office.
In the year 2018, his film 'Stree' which proved to be a blockbuster at the box office. Shraddha Kapoor and Pankaj Tripathi were seen in the lead roles in this film. The film became the highest-grossing film of all time in Rajkumar Rao's career. Last year, three of his films were released in 2019. 'Made in China', 'When I saw a girl, it felt like' and 'Judicial is what'.
Amit Masurkar, Director (Newton)
Speaking about Rao, Amit Masurkar, director of the film 'Newton' said, 'First of all I know Rajkummar Rao from his debut film' Love Sex and Cheat '. At that time I came to shoot that film making and we were shooting in a 2 star hotel in Chhattisgarh. Where there was no TV in our room and Rajkumar loved cricket so much that he opened the electronic shop under the hotel and used to sit and watch cricket matches in the night.
Hair curly due to Dedication
During the shoot of 'Newton', Newton called me one day 3 to 4 months before the shoot and he called me in Hakim Salim's Saloon. In 'Newton', his idea was to have curly hair, Rajkumar Rao's idea. He said that he had seen the picture of Scientist Isaac Newton and that his hair was scattered and curly in the same way, so he also thought that if he would make this small change in his hair, he might get a little bit of it and that I really liked his dedication.
Rajkumar is adept at doing action scenes
'During the film, I came to know that Rajkumar Rao has a black belt in martial arts which few people know. In one scene of this film, Rajkumar Rao plays football with children and I am very impressed by the way he kicked. When I asked him about this, he said that he is often cast in films where his character is intense and where he does not have to do some action scenes. But they can do action scenes very well. I was very impressed by his words.
Rajkumar used to get up at 3 in the night
'I remember at that time that his call time used to be at 6:00 in the morning for which Rajkumar Rao used to get up at 3:00 in the night, exercise. It took him 2 hours to do make-up and after that at 6:00, Sharp would come to the set. It is a great thing to show so much dedication about their work. He is always a Concern for his fitness too. I say that all those who want to come into the film industry should take inspiration from Rajkumar.
Mikhail Musale, Director (Made in China)
'Made in China was my first Hindi film but Rajkummar Rao supported me a lot. They make everyone comfortable on the set. I remember that on the first day of the shoot, he sang a song on the mic and got all the unit members dancing so that everyone who came from different places and backgrounds would be comfortable with each other. 'Also when I went to China 15 -20 days before the shooting, I got a call from Rajkumar for Reiki and he told me that he was in Ahmedabad. He actually went to Ahmedabad because his character in the film is of Gujarati businessman and he was staying at that place to get into that role. His quality that he studies his role, prepares and works hard is very impressive. '
Amar Kaushik, Director (Female)
'Rajkumar Rao is a person from whom you can share your heartfelt words and he listens to you very carefully. They eat very sattvic food. They are completely vegetarian and their food on the set comes in a small bowl as we all used to eat in childhood. If they are going out somewhere, then they also like to stay in the dhaba and eat.
Rajkummar Rao was the most chirpy on the set or if there were any masters. His most unique quality is that he used to remember his own dialogues but he also remembered the dialogues of the front actors. So if the front man ever forgot his dialogue, the prince himself reminded him. He is so immersed in his character that we used to call him Vicky instead of Rajkumar on the sets.
'Looking at Rajkummar Rao on the set, it does not seem that he has played many intense roles, he was always in the mood for fun. I think there is a lot of commercial spice inside them which is yet to be explored. They also play an intense character.
Rajkummar Rao remembers almost every song from the 90s. He not only likes to listen to old songs but also remembers the signature step of each song. They used to show signature steps on these songs in front of us on the set. From Sarakai Lo Khatia Jada Lage, he also remembers many weird songs.
