A senior police official said that the five people, who were in the car, were returning to Moga late Monday night after attending a wedding ceremony in the town of Dirba in Sangrur district.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Sangrur, Vivek Sheel Soni said that a doctor was also among those killed. According to the SSP, the incident is of late night. The car crashed into the diesel tank of the truck and spilled oil, causing the car to catch fire. The occupants of the car did not get time to get out and were burnt alive. The car had to be cut to take out the bodies.
Police said the truck driver absconded from the spot, though he is expected to be caught soon. A car caught fire after hitting a tree two days ago near Phagwara bypass chowk in Hoshiarpur district, in which a senior advocate and his assistant were burnt alive.
All the people who lost their lives in the tragic accident are from Moga district. Those identified as Balwinder Singh, resident of Talewal, Moga, Kulatar Singh from Nanak Nagar, Moga, Captain Sukhwinder Singh from Green Field Colony, Moga, Surinder Singh from Ramuwalia, Moga and Chamkaur Singh from Moga. The bodies were sent to Sangrur Civil Hospital for postmortem.
