Seeing Rahul's future, Manmohan was made PM
In his book Obama has written that many political observers believe that Sonia Gandhi chose Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister because Manmohan without any national political base would not be a threat to his son Rahul Gandhi. Sonia believed that Rahul was going to take charge of the Congress party later, in such a situation, he should not be threatened by any major personality of the party.

Sonia, a clever and intelligent woman, used to turn the discussion to Rahul.
Obama has also mentioned in his book a dinner party held at the residence of former PM Manmohan Singh. Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi joined this party. As Obama writes, Sonia Gandhi was keen to listen more than she spoke, she used to express her differences with careful consideration when taking a different view from Manmohan on Policy Matter. Also in the conversation she used to turn the discussion towards her son.
He wrote, It became clear to me that Sonia is a smart and intelligent woman. As far as Rahul is concerned, he looked sharp and passionate and like his mother, he was also beautiful. He offered his views on the future of progressive politics.
Obama wrote, “During the conversation, Rahul would often stop and talk about the details of my 2008 election campaign.” His nervousness and perverted qualities were becoming evident in this. Rahul seemed like a student who had flirted with impressing the teacher by completing his course, but from within he either lacked competence or lacked passion to master the subject.
