What is DA and why is it increased?
Dearness allowance is a part of the salary of government employees and pensioners only. Its purpose is to reduce the effect of inflation. To deal with the rising inflation, the salary of government employees is changed from time to time. DA is revised twice every year in January and July. DA is related to cost of living. It depends on whether the employees work in urban area, semi-urban or rural area. In 2006, the central government changed the formula for calculating dearness allowance. Now it is calculated on the new formula.

If DA increases by 3%, how much will the salary increase?
The basic salary of a central government employee is Rs 20,000 per month and if DA is increased by 3 per cent, then his salary will increase by Rs 6,800 according to 34% dearness allowance. Since the dearness allowance is linked to the basic pay, the increase in it will also increase the employees’ Provident Fund (PF), gratuity amount and other allowances linked to the basic salary such as traveling allowance.
