There are rumours that Apple is working on a successor to its M1 chip, which might be christened M2. But what’s more fascinating is there are reports that already suggest the new chip will be used in the refreshed MacBook Air and a new version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro.
A report by 9to5Mac, too, reiterated these rumours, mentioning that Apple will introduce a ‌MacBook Air‌ and a 13-inch MacBook Pro with ‌M2‌ chip later this year. The report added that noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s recent prediction, where he said that Apple will use M1 or an updated version of it on its next-generation ‌MacBook Air‌, is incorrect.
Even though analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the new MacBook Air will have an updated M1 chip, sources close to the website confirmed the machine is being developed with the new M2 chip.
The next-generation MacBook Air, which is codenamed J413, is expected to be released in a single version featuring the M2 chip.
The report by 9to5Mac, however, claims Apple could drop the “Pro” labelling on the 13-inch MacBook Pro, referring to it as just “MacBook” as they have done in the past.
It must be noted that we have learnt a lot about how the next-generation versions of the ‌MacBook Air‌ and 13-inch MacBook Pro from sources like Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who had also confirmed that the new ‌MacBook Air‌ will come in a completely refreshed look.
Bloomberg’s Gurman had earlier provided insight into how the new ‌M2‌ chip might come with the same 8-core CPU as the ‌M1‌ but with 9 and 10-core GPU options.
Although there’s no confirmation on the timeline of release, it is expected that the M2 device may launch later this year.
