‘Azadi’ from 4G by August 15, PMO took command to start 5G


new Delhi. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has given orders to the Department of Telecommunications to start 5G services in the country soon. After the order of the Prime Minister’s Office, now the Telecom Department has urged the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to give its recommendations regarding 5G by March 2. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has to give its recommendation on the rules regarding the auction process of 5G spectrum.

In a letter to the TRAI Secretary, the Department of Telecom has said that the Prime Minister’s Office wants to start 5G services in the country by August 15, 2022. In a letter to TRAI Secretary on 22 February, DoT has said, “With reference to the decision/action points emerging out of the deliberations of a Monitoring Group, the Prime Minister’s Office has requested DoT to start 5G services by August 15, 2022.” and requested TRAI to obtain recommendations in this regard by March 2022.

Recommendations sought from TRAI

As per the procedure, the department seeks recommendations from TRAI on the spectrum price, method of allotting it, size of its block, modalities of payment. TRAI consults with industry and other stakeholders and sends recommendations to DoT.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is in the process of finalizing its recommendations regarding multiple bands, price, quantum and other conditions for auctioning 5G spectrum. Apart from this, new frequencies such as 526-698 MHz, Military Band and 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300-3670 MHz. Rules are also being made regarding this.

It will take two months to start the auction

Not long ago, Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman Rajaraman had said that it would take two months for the DoT to start the auction from the day TRAI’s recommendations were received. According to the department, data from 5G will be able to download 10 times faster than 4G service.

Digital Communications Commission will take the decision

As per the existing procedure, the apex decision making body in the Department of Telecom is the Digital Communications Commission (erstwhile Telecom Commission), which takes decisions on the recommendations of TRAI. Then it is sent to the cabinet for final approval. Rajaraman had told that the DoT has selected MSTC as the auctioneer for the upcoming auction.
