new Delhi. In the infrastructure sector, the cost of 421 projects with an expenditure of Rs 150 crore or more has increased by more than Rs 4.73 lakh crore from the estimated estimate. This information has been given in a report of the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. The cost of these projects has increased due to delays and other reasons.
The ministry supervises projects in the infrastructure sector costing Rs 150 crore or more. The ministry’s February-2022 report states that out of 1,565 such projects, 421 have cost overruns, while 647 projects are running late.
According to the report, “The original cost of implementation of these 1,565 projects was Rs 21,86,542.05 crore, which is expected to increase to Rs 26,59,914.61 crore. This shows that the cost of these projects has increased by 21.65 per cent or Rs 4,73,352.56 crore.

13.26 lakh crore has been spent till February 2022
According to the report, Rs 13,26,569.75 crore has been spent on these projects till February-2022, which is 49.87 percent of the total estimated cost. However, the ministry says that if we look at the recent timelines for completion of projects, the number of delayed projects will come down to 553.
43 months is the average of the delay
The report did not give information about the year of commissioning of 631 projects. The report said that out of 647 delayed projects, 84 projects were delayed by one month to 12 months, 124 projects between 13 and 24 months, 327 projects were delayed by 25 to 60 months and 112 projects were delayed by 61 months or more. The average delay of these 647 projects is 42.60 months.

Delay in land acquisition is also the reason
The reasons for the delay in these projects are the delay in land acquisition, delay in getting clearances from the environment and forest departments and lack of infrastructure. Apart from these, due to funding of the project, delay in implementation of detailed engineering, changes in the prospects of projects, delay in tender process, delay in award of contracts and procurement of equipment, legal and other problems, unforeseen land changes etc. Projects have been delayed.
