new Delhi : In order to increase revenue, the decision taken by the Railway Board to open its food plazas, fast food outlets and restaurants apart from its catering unit Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is facing a technical issue. On this decision of the Railways, some officials of its catering and tourism unit believe that there is a need for clarity in this order. They say that this decision of the board is probably for those places where the bidders should have come, but due to lack of interest there due to some reason or the basis of all the assessments, the food plazas could not open there. In the next two to three months, IRCTC is preparing to open more than 70 food plazas across the country.
An IRCTC official said that under the Railway Catering Policy 2017 for catering by the Railway Board, such food plazas, whose tender is not being able to be done by IRCTC, will be done by the Railways itself. All the tenders that IRCTC had done in the last two years were closed due to the Corona epidemic. Due to bad business conditions, someone was involved in the tender process.
According to the official, IRCTC is currently running more than 300 food plazas across the country and the tender for opening more than 75 plazas is in the final stages of finalization. In such a situation, around 75 food plazas of IRCTC are likely to open in the next two to three months. He says that the locations where the railways is being asked to open their food plazas or restaurants etc., can hardly be around 20 locations, where the bidders could not come. This decision of the board was probably for those locations where the bidders should have come, but due to their lack of interest in the tender there, they could not open it.
