New Delhi. Due to the epidemic, school-college studies could not be done for the whole year. Most of the students were taught through online education. But in smaller cities i.e. Tier-Two and Three, there were many problems ranging from devices. In view of this, online learning platform Convegenius made a new innovation.
Moving away from other edtechs, Convegenius decided to convert its existing solution to a parent-based offering, moving tablet-based learning to WhatsApp. With this, even during the spread of the virus, students could learn from home through chat-based teaching through phone. Through this, Convegenius gave education to more than 1.5 crore students in just 11 months.

Promoted the outreach of edtech platforms

Viprav Choudhary, VP-Operations at Convenience, explains that during COVID-19, the availability of digital devices was a major bottleneck in education for students from rural and remote areas in India. Social enterprise in the backdrop of technological shift caused by the pandemic, he said.

The move from tablet-based adaptive learning to chatbot-assisted teaching and learning has fueled the outreach of edtech platforms.

Target to reach 5 crore students
Since its inception in 2014, the startup has raised over Rs 20 crore in funding from institutional investors such as Michael and Susan Dell Foundation (MSDF), Benori Ventures, Enablers, and Ashish Gupta, Founder and Trustee, Ashoka University, among others. Its annual revenue in the financial year 2019-20 was Rs 18.4 crore. Despite the pandemic-induced changes in the education sector, Convegenius is looking to reach 4-5 crore students from middle and low-income families in 2021 as part of the company’s ‘Edtech for New India (ETNB)’ mission .

Technology change has facilitated students in this way
The ConveGenius team adopted a chatbot-based model of learning by integrating the WhatsApp API into their solution and using the Messenger function to deliver short-lived information and content to students studying from home. This model was inspired by the device (tablet/PC) disparity that emerged from the virus outbreak. Also there was the surprising ubiquity of WhatsApp in Indian households of all socio-economic backgrounds. The super-friendly interface of this app has further made it the ideal solution for students to study under quarantine and their parents to monitor and participate in the learning progress of their children. Since the launch of the chat-based teaching and learning platform in May 2020, ConveGenius now reaches 15 million students across 10 languages, with learning sessions through the WhatsApp platform reaching a weekly rate of 98% completion.
