Joblessness rate in double digits in April-June ’21 – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Unemployment rate in urban areas among the 15-year-and-above category jumped to double-digit levels in the April-June quarter of 2021 at 12.6% from 9.3% in the January-March period as the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic severely hurt jobs.
Data released by the National Statistical Office on Monday showed that the labour force participation rate (LFPR) of women fell to 20.1% during the three months to June 2021 from 21.2% in the previous quarter and the overall labour force participation rate also fell in the April-June quarter of 2021 to 46.8% from 47.5% in the January-March quarter of 2021. LFPR is defined as the percentage of persons in the labour force (working or seeking or available for work) in the population.
The unemployment rate for all ages rose to 12.7% during April-June 2021 from 9.4% in the January-March quarter. Though the unemployment rate shot up to double-digit levels in the April-June quarter of 2021, it remained below the 20.8% recorded during the first wave of the pandemic. The rate of unemployment of females rose to 14.3% in the three months to June 2021, rising from 11.8% in the previous quarter. The joblessness among men during this period was higher at 12.2%, up from 8.6% in the January-March quarter.
The worker population rate, defined as the percentage of employed persons in the population, fell to 40.9% for those above 15 years during the three months to June 2021, from 43.1% in the previous quarter. For males it was at 64.2% in the April-June 2021 quarter, lower than the 67.2% in the previous three month period while for women it was at 17.2% from 18.7% in the January-March quarter.
The proportion of self employed in the 15 years and above category rose to 40.7% in the April-June quarter, up from 39.3% in the previous quarter as the pandemic induced lockdown triggered job losses.
