BENGALURU: Lowe’s India, the global capability centre of the $96-billion home improvement retailer Lowe’s, has expanded its footprint in Bengaluru with a second office. The new facility on Lavelle Road in Bengaluru’s central business district will provide approximately 14,000 sqft of additional space.
Seemantini Godbole, Lowe’s EVP and chief information officer, said the India centre has been integral to accelerating Lowe’s digital transformation roadmap. “In the last two years, our digital growth (sales online) was 140%,” she said, “Our customers who weren’t shopping online started doing so, in addition to digitally-savvy customers who continued to double down on it. We also saw an increase in curbside pick-up (which allows customers to collect their order from a convenient location) during the pandemic, and we provided the experience on the app. We created the whole experience in less than six months and the India team played a large part in it,” she said.
Godbole said the expansion of its India operations will enable teams to continue to grow and provide capabilities across its engineering, analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, product management, merchandising, supply chain, marketing, finance and accounting functions, and more.
Godbole said the India team contributed to rearchitecting its platform, from packaged tech to homegrown tech. Packaged tech, she said, was inadequate to deal with the spike in volumes they were seeing.
Lowe’s India’s associate count has grown 60% during the pandemic to more than 3,600 across both technology and business services roles. The company expects to continue to grow the Bengaluru workforce.
The home improvement retailer serves 19 million customers every week across 2,200 home improvement stores in the US and Canada. The tech teams in Bengaluru supported its Pro and DIY customers with personalised experiences. The Pro customer (those like contractors, repair remodelers, specialty tradesmen) shops at Lowe’s significantly more often than DIY customers, so the upgrades were designed to enhance keeping in mind convenience and intuitive interfaces to drive personalisation at scale.
