NEW DELHI: Homegrown hotel aggregator Oyo on Tuesday said it will offer free accommodation to refugees fleeing Ukraine. With this move, Oyo joins the ranks of scores of multinational companies offering aid to refugees from the war-torn nation, apart from halting investments in Russia.
The development comes close on the heels of global home-sharing giant Airbnb’s announcement of offering complimentary, short-term housing to up to one lakh refugees fleeing Ukraine. Airbnb is an investor in Oyo.
“We are deeply inspired by our home-owners who are opening their homes and hearts to people in dire need,” said Ritesh Agarwal, founder & group CEO, Oyo. “We are also in conversation with multiple organisations locally to ensure that refugees are matched with available accommodation in the region. ”
SoftBank-backed Oyo claims it has thousands of homes across Europe. Starting with Poland, it said it has initiated concerted efforts, appealing to more than 600 homeowners on its platform to open their holiday homes to refugees.
These stays will be free for refugees who cannot pay for them, and the costs will be borne by the company and its home-owners who volunteer to host refugees. The company will support administratively covering operational expenses incurred by the home-owners.
