New Delhi: The central government has got great success in recovering from Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, who fled the country with thousands of crores of rupees from banks. The government has so far confiscated his total assets worth Rs 19,111.20 crore. Out of this, assets worth Rs 15,113.91 crore have been handed over to those public sector banks, taking whose money these fugitive economic offenders have fled. This information was given by the Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary in reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written reply to a question asked by BJP MP Brij Lal, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary said that Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, through their respective companies, duped public sector banks to the tune of Rs 22,585.83 crore. is installed. All of them raised this amount from banks through loans and fled the country without paying it back. The Minister of State for Finance said that under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the total assets of the three fugitives worth Rs 19,111.20 crore have been attached till March 15, 2022.

Banks got back more than 15 thousand crores

When asked whether there is any proposal to give back money to banks by confiscation of properties of fugitive businessmen, Pankaj Choudhary said that there is a provision under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Fugitive Economic Offenders Act 2018 (FEOA). That the court after hearing the offenses can lawfully return any property involved in money laundering to the claimant. These include banks.

According to him, out of Rs 19,111.20 crore, assets worth Rs 15,113.91 crore have been received by the public sector banks. The central government has attached assets worth about Rs 335.06 crore. Till March 15, 2022, 84.61 percent of the frauds committed by them have been confiscated. Whereas 66.91 percent of the total loss to the banks has been returned.
