NEW DELHI: Food delivery startup Swiggy has started offering its delivery executives managerial roles within the company, a move that is expected to set a precedent at a time when gig workers are in high demand.
Swiggy, which is gunning for pole position in India’s booming quick commerce market, is currently allowing people, who have been working as delivery executives with the company for 5-6 years, to apply for the senior positions. “This is a pilot. The company is trying to reduce the 5-6 years requirement to a lower duration,” a person in know of the matter told TOI . Afood delivery executive typically earns between Rs 15,000 and Rs 18,000 a month on an average, although contractors or the companies promise around Rs 25,000 per month, according to staffing companies.
A senior role as a fleet manager in Swiggy could fetch the same delivery executive Rs 4-5 lakh a year or even higher in some cases. In the case of an area manager, the salary could go up to around Rs 11 lakh per annum based on experience, showed industry estimates. “I joined Swiggy as a delivery partner in 2017. By this time, I have completed my graduation with knowledge in computers and Microsoft Excel. The moment I heard about the vacancy, I knew I had a good chance to get selected, so I immediately applied,” said Sharath, an area manager with Swiggy in Bengaluru in a Linkedin post.
Companies such as Swiggy and Zomato, which employ a gig workforce, fa- ce a churn of 45% monthon-month, with a large number leaving the job to work in similar positions at another company. A delivery executive, on an average, sticks to a company for four months before moving on.
“Three types of people joined companies as delivery executives,” said Chirag Mittal, co-founder & CEO at Gigforce, an on-demand staffing platform. “The first section consists of those that ran shops or small businesses before Covid and joined when things shut down during the pandemic. They were waiting for things to get better. ”
The second section comprises of people who were pursuing their education on the side and the rest 2025% are those that wish to be only delivery executives, according to Mittal.
Swiggy, which is calling its hiring initiative for delivery executives the StepAhead programme, did not comment for this story.
