New Delhi. Famous industrialist and former chairman of Bajaj Group, Rahul Bajaj died in Pune on Saturday. He was 83 years old. He was suffering from cancer for a long time. Rahul Bajaj took over the responsibility of Bajaj Group in the year 1972. He was associated with Bajaj Group of Companies for almost 5 decades.

Coming from the Marwari family of Rajasthan, Rahul Bajaj was born on 10 June 1938 in Bengal Presidency. The foundation of the Bajaj business house was laid by Rahul’s grandfather Jamnalal Bajaj. Rahul Bajaj carried forward the business of Bajaj Gharana. His ancestral home was in Kashikabas of Sikar district in Rajasthan.

Rahul Bajaj received his early education from Cathedral and John Connon School. He holds an Economics (Hons) degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and a law degree from Bombay University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Rahul Bajaj took over the responsibility of Bajaj Group in 1965. Under his leadership, the turnover of Bajaj Auto reached from 7.2 crores to 12 thousand crores. It became the country’s leading company selling scooters. He was the chairman of Bajaj Group for 50 years.

  • Rahul Bajaj received him ‘Padma Bhushan’ in the year 2001.
  • Received Alumni (Alumni) Achievement Award by Harvard Business School.
  • Awarded “Life Time Achievement Award” by Navbharat Times, Ernst & Young and CNBC TV-18.
  • Appointed “Knight in the Order of the Legion of Honour” by the President of the Republic of France.
  • The Government of India appointed Rahul Bajaj as the Chairman of the Council for the Development of Automobile and Allied Industries from 1975 to 1977.
  • In 1975, he was awarded the ‘Man of the Year’ award by the National Quality Assurance Institute.
  • In 1990, he received the Bombay Management Association Award for the most distinguished services in the field of management.
  • The Prince of Wales made him a member of the “Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum” in February 1992.
  • The FIE Foundation honored him with the Rashtra Bhushan Samman in the year 1996.
  • The Lokmanya Tilak Memorial Trust honored Mr. Bajaj with the Tilak Award in 2000.

  • From 1979-1980 to 1999-2000, Rahul was the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He was the President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce. Along with this, Rahul was also the President of the Development Council for Automobile and Allied Industries. He was appointed as the chairman of Indian Airlines by the Government of India from 1986 to 1989.
  • The President of India made him the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the ‘Indian Institute of Technology Bombay’ from 2003 to 2006. He was a former chairman and member of the International Business Council, Geneva’s Economic Forum, and a member of the Harvard Business School’s Global Advisory Board. Rahul was a member of the International Advisory Council of the Brookings Institution, Washington DC, and was also a member of the Executive Board of the Indian School of Business.
  • Rahul Bajaj was also a major contributor to the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the Bajaj Group. Under this, organizations such as Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation and Shiksha Mandal and several social organizations such as Bhartiya Yuva Shakti Trust and Ruby Hall Clinic (a large hospital in Pune) were run.
