In the first nine months of 2021-22, the number of passengers traveling in railways without tickets has increased exponentially. In a reply under Right to Information (RTI), the Railways said that in April-December 2021, 1.78 crore passengers were caught without tickets.

Railways said that this number is 79 percent more than before Corona (2019-2020). This includes the number of people traveling without tickets as well as those carrying unbooked luggage. In 2020-21, when railway traffic was affected due to the epidemic, then the number of people traveling without tickets was only 27 lakhs.

Railways recovered 1,017.48 crore fine
In the case of ticketless journey or traveling on wrong ticket, the Railways collected a fine of Rs 1,017.48 crore in the first nine months of the current financial year itself. In 2019-2020, the total number of passengers traveling without tickets was 1.10 crore and Rs 561.73 crore was recovered as fine.

The necessity of online booking is a big reason
Sources related to the matter say that due to the reduction in infection, the Railways has resumed the operation of most of the express and superfast trains. Along with this, the railways has given the option of online booking only, due to which the passengers of rural areas are getting the most difficulty. Until the facility of getting all types of tickets from the window starts, this process will increase.

Waiting passengers are most in trouble
In the first 6 months of the current financial year, passengers with waiting tickets have shown the most distress. During this 52 lakh passengers had to cancel their journey. The number of passengers is increasing on most routes, while the number of trains was reduced during Corona. Now the railways will also have to increase the number of trains on these routes.
