new Delhi. Millionaires live in almost every city of our country. But, in India with a population of more than 136 crores, only 8,13,22,263 people have paid income tax. This information was given by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Rajya Sabha in response to a question. The Finance Minister said that a total of 8,13,22,263 people have paid income tax in the 2020-21 assessment year, that is, in the financial year 2019-20.

The Finance Minister said that 8,13,22,263 people include Individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), Association of Persons, Body of Individuals Firms, Local Authorities, Artificial Judicial Persons. Those who have paid income tax and filed income tax return. At the same time, there are a total of 8,22,83,407 taxpayers in the country in the assessment year 2020-21 out of the total population of 136,30,06,000.

These people are included in the tax payers

The Finance Minister said that in the assessment year 2020-21, 8,22,83,407 taxpayers also include those who have paid income tax and corporate tax and filed income tax returns. Also, there are those people whose TDS has been deducted, but they have not filed income tax return.

Efforts to bring more people in the tax net

Describing the measures to identify such people, who come under the tax net but do not pay tax, the Finance Minister said that the government has started Non-filers, Monitoring System (NMS). In NMS, such people are identified who have done huge money transactions but have not filed income tax returns. Apart from this, to bring more people under the tax net, the Income Tax Department has launched Project Insight on the basis of income and transactions.
