TweetDeck is quite popular with a certain section of Twitter users who want ‘more’ than the regular version of the microblogging platform. So far, TweetDeck has been free to use but it looks like Twitter may make it a paid service.
According to a report by The Verge, which cites a tweet by security researcher Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter is filling in the new TweetDeck signup page. In a tweet, Wong said that the new signup page has two highlights: a link for “the legacy version of TweetDeck”; and the promise of an ad-free experience. An ad-free experience means that Twitter could very well make it a paid service.

Earlier this month, Wong had tweeted that she had spotted a code that hinted at TweetDeck becoming an exclusive Twitter Blue service. Twitter Blue is a subscription service from Twitter and gives users features like the ability to undo tweets and read ad-free articles on the microblogging platform. The new subscription service is available for both iOS and Android users along with the Twitter web.
Subscribers of Twitter Blue will also get early access to features that the microblogging app is testing. They will also be able to upload videos of up to 10-minutes (as opposed to the standard ~2 minutes for non-subscribers) via Longer Video uploads and pin their favourite conversations to the top of their DM’s with pinned conversations.
Twitter acquired TweetDeck in 2011 and last year mentioned that it is working on a big “overhaul” of the app. It could be that the overhaul would include new features and the app could become a paid one. However, Twitter hasn’t mentioned anything about the development so far. Having said that, Wong has a pretty good track record when it comes to upcoming features across social media platforms, so if you use TweetDeck then be prepared about the fact that you may end up paying for it.
