Ujjwala Yojana: More than one crore people left LPG subsidy, know how many lakh people got employment


new Delhi. Since the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana- PMUY, more than one crore people of the country have given up the LPG subsidy. Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Rameshwar Teli said that due to the implementation of the scheme, one lakh people have got employment through LPG distribution system.

In a webinar, he said that in the last five years, the penetration of LPG has increased from 61.9 per cent to almost 100 per cent. As part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, more than 14 crore filled cylinders were given free of cost to the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana during the pandemic.

The needy got the benefit of giving up subsidy
In the webinar, Rakesh Misri, director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, says that more than one crore people themselves came forward and gave up the subsidy on LPG. Its benefit has been given to the needy. Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayats have been organized to take the Ujjwala scheme from door to door. Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, representatives of oil marketing companies, distributors and cylinder producers participated in the webinar.

Common effort required to deliver door-to-door
Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said that there is a need to make joint efforts to take the scheme door-to-door. Involving SHGs in making the scheme effective, creation of LPG banks to act as micro finance for refill cylinders, setting up of a network of micro distributors and existing social networks to attract consumers for refills and Special attention should be given to leveraging institutional knowledge.

Santosh Kumar, Executive Director (LPG), Bharat Petroleum said that before this scheme LPG connections were considered as an urban product i.e. cooking fuel for people living in cities and towns. Now its reach has reached the rural areas. This facility is also easily available to the poor living in villages.
