Unemployment Rate: NSO survey claims, unemployment rate in urban areas has come down to 12.6 percent

New Delhi: With the improvement in the situation of Corona epidemic, employment opportunities have started increasing and the unemployment rate has started declining. This information has been given in the labor force survey released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Monday. According to the NSO, the unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas declined to 12.6 percent in April-June, 2021. It was 20.8 percent in the same period last year. Due to the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the corona epidemic, the unemployment rate had reached this level in April-June, 2020.

According to the NSO, the number of male unemployed in urban areas declined to 12.2 percent in April-June 2021 from 20.7 percent in the same period last year. Similarly, the unemployment rate for women came down from 21.1 percent to 14.3 percent.

According to the NSO survey, the unemployment rate in urban areas was 9.3 percent in January-March 2021. The figure was 8.6 percent for men and 11.8 percent for women during this period. The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons in the labor force.

PLFS in April 2017 by NSO (Periodic Labor Force Survey) was launched. A bulletin is issued every quarter as per labor force indicators based on PLFS. It gives information on the distribution of workers based on unemployment rate, worker population ratio (WPR), labor force participation rate (LFPR), employment in current weekly position (CWS), and industry-wide situation.
